System of a Down are the best band in the world. FACT. When it comes to SOAD it is a pure love or hate affair, I’ve never met anyone who just ‘likes’ System. As a massive fan, what disappoints me most is that 90% of people listen to ten seconds of their music and immediately disregard it as ‘noise’. If you take the time to listen to their lyrics however, you’ll see that their music is so much more than that. Full of meaning and messages, perfectly delivered in the form of energetic music. I never got to see them this weekend at Download and I REALLY wish I had. I’ve been told they were amazing. So, in honour of their genius, here’s an old school slice of System. This vid is a personal favourite of mine, A) because it contains clips from Fritz Lang’s 1927 film METROPOLIS, and B) because Serj is a wizard of dance in this vid. So go on, give it a listen, let the music seep into your ears…try telling me then it’s just noise…

X-men: First Class- Review

After some truly awful marketing and the pathetic effort of the last two films, I was somewhat reserved in my excitement for Matthew Vaughn’s take on X-men. HOW WRONG I WAS. This is a superb film. Seriously, it’s the dog’s bollocks. The cat’s pyjama’s infact. The best X-men film and quite possibly my favourite Marvel film.

The characters of Xavier and Magneto are spot on, as is the portrayal of their friendship. It’s perfectly executed, and they compliment and bounce off each other with ease. It’s engaging viewing from start to finish, as the audience is being treated to an origins story that adds depth to two HUGE characters in the franchise. It’s a dramatic and revealing insight into the history, rivalry and bond between two ‘SUPERPOWERS’ of the X-men universe. Something that’s missing in the previous films.

Both Fassbender and McAvoy are brilliant. (FASSBENDER!) I loved Fassbender for the role of Magneto after seeing him in ‘Fish Tank’ and ‘Bastards’, but wasn’t entirely won over by McAvoy cast as Xavier. I was wrong to doubt. McAvoy’s performance is amazing. Probably the best in the film.

The action sequences are engaging and visually impressive, (if not a little dependant on Magneto and Azazel), and compliment each mutants powers. Every character gets an opportunity to show off their ability in either a clever, artistic or suspenseful manner. It’s smart, cool, impressive action.

I really have very little negative to say about the film. Perhaps the score could have been slightly stronger. It’s good and supports the pace of the film, but just isn’t particularly memorable. Lacks the oooomph factor of say Danny Elfman’s ’Spiderman’ score or Hans Zimmer’s ‘Dark Knight’.

Overall, a high enjoyable and satisfying film. It’s a character driven X-men film thats fresh, vibrant and energetic. Fans of the franchise will not be disappointed.

(There’s also an awesome cameo appearance as well…. :P)

With time on Dan’s hands over summer, these are the three things he’ll be focusing his attention on;

1. STOP SMOKING

It’s filthy and uncool. That and I had a dream the other day that I had to have one of my legs amputated because the arteries were clogged up. If that’s not an incentive, I don’t know what is. Although my amputated leg would make for an amusing draught excluder….

2. GET BACK INTO SHAPE

Look at that perfect torso. Bradley, you make me want to be a better man. Back to the gym…
